The principle of operation of the Ferrofluidic seal is simple: a ring of permanent magnets around the shaft holds a small volume of ferrofluid in place where it forms a liquid O-ring. As the O-ring is liquid it forms a zero leakage seal as it conforms to the shape of the shaft and any slight eccentricity of rotation. In the case of accidental process overpressurisation, once the overpressurisation has passed, the seal will automatically re-seal as the ferrofluid is attracted back to the area of greatest magnetic flux density.
An important feature of the Ferrofluidic seal is that it does not require the auxiliary flushes or services associated with traditional mechanical seals. The Ferrofluidic seal is one of a number of vapour sealing op-tions in the CPXV pump range to meet applications with particular environmental requirements.
