Flexible helical filter dryer

Filtration and drying in one unit
Flexible helical filter dryer

Investors increasingly assess plant components by taking into account their versatility of application. Flexibility in allowing other uses and the possibility of extending capacity have become increasingly important criteria in choosing the right product. The helical filter fulfils both of these prerequisites.

Dipl. Ing. Johann Bucek

The increasing complexity of process sequences is continually placing new demands on the functions required of production filters. Process engineers are being required to plan long-term investments and to take into account diversity of use. Although a projected investment amortisation is usually 3 to 4 years, longer usage is nonetheless economically attractive. The helical filter dryer is a multifunctional apparatus and is able to keep pace with the continually changing chemical processes and is also able to adapt to new demands.
Operational requirements
Financial considerations require the necessity of increasing production. This can be achieved through reducing the retention time in the apparatus. Intermediate steps and interruptions should be avoided, contact between product and personnel kept to an absolute minimum. Production and residue loss should be avoided when emptying the filter. An increase in productivity is also possible through increasing the filter area without having to replace the basic apparatus. On the other hand, there are operational considera-tions requiring that processes be automatically controlled and changes in temperature do not result in mechanical stress. It should not be necessary to open the apparatus for cleaning. Further practical advantages are avoidance of the use of seals and gaskets, discharge in a completely closed system and maintenance with a minimum of waste and time loss.
Filter dryer meets expectations
The helical filter dryer combines these requirements into one patented device. It ensures a complete and even drying process without hot spots, a broad range in temperature and pressure, and handles the product gently without causing mechanical stress. The cake production is uniform and without fast sedimentation. An intensive dynamic cake washing process is possible. The complete process takes place under sterile conditions and in an inert atmosphere. It is possible to adjust the filter mesh size without changing the basic apparatus.
Applications of filter dryer unit
The filter can be used not only for classic filtration and drying processes, but can also be employed as a combined contact and dynamic blade dryer. In special cases it can also be used as a fluid bed dryer which allows a considerable shortening of the required drying period. The helical filter dryer can be employed as a purification, residue, flush, cross-flow and selective filter. It is suitable for all branches of the chemical and pharmaceutical industries and is increasingly being used for environmental purposes, in the food and drinks industry, the metal working industry, petrochemical and in the fibre and textile industry. Examples can be found in the field of polymerisation, in applications with additives and resins, in the production of catalysts and pigments as well as in classic applications such as in the production of agricultural, pharmaceutical and biotech products.
