The nickel-molybdenum alloy Nimofer 6629 – alloy B-4 is a new material which is resistant to highly corrosive, reducing media: The weldability has been enhanced by raising the proportions of the alloying elements iron and chromium to 2.5 and 0.8 % compared with the predecessor alloy. The improved microstructure makes the material easier to work and less sensitive to temperatures. One of the first applications is a skimmer centrifuge which measures 1300 by 800 mm. Housing and drum are shaped and welded out of solid plates in thicknesses of 3 to 20 mm. The centrifuge processes 30 % concentrated hydrochloric acid at 60 °C. Crop protection agent feed stocks with a pH value of 1 and solvents such as methanol, 2-propanol and toluene are also produced. They cause high rates of corrosion on other high-alloy stainless steels and nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloys.
