Handling chemicals as well as constructing and operating chemical plant demands taking safety guidelines and legislation into account. The Chemsafe database allows rapid access to evaluated fire and explosion protection data. It contains around 45000 data sets for more than 2300 gases, liquids and dusts. Explosion limits, flash point and ignition temperature are as well shown as minimum energy of ignition, maximum explosion pressure or maximum workplace concentration. Additionally the classification groups for the transport and storage of chemicals are listed. Furthermore the database offers thermophysical data relevant to plant safety, e.g. density, melting and boiling point. Chemsafe can be accessed on-line or in-house. The data-base is available on-line on STN International. The Oracle based in-house version can be run on a single PC or serve a network. The database is a joint project of the Dechema e.V. (German Society for Chemical Apparatus, Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology), the BAM (Federal Authority for Materials Re-search and Testing), Berlin, and the PTB (Applied Physics Centre), Brunswick. These federal institutions are responsible for the evaluation of the data.
